I'm not certain I understand what you are asking about the default-gateway.  Is you question what will the devices on each LAN use for their default-gateway?  If so then each subnet will use their respective Ethernet sub-interface IP address on the ADTRAN (192.168.1.1 & 192.168.0.1).  If your question is what is the default-route/default-gateway for the ADTRAN router, then that will be whatever the Internet Service Provider gave you as the next hop IP address for the Internet connection.

If you have a chance to clarify what question you are asking about the default-gateway, I will try my best to answer it.

Hey Levi,

I understand each VLAN will use it's respective sub-interface address as a default gateway.  My question is, currently on the 5305 I do not have any VLAN's in use and the operational LAN is using 192.168.0.x/24 pointing to the 5305 default gateway of 192.168.0.1.  When I create a VLAN for the operational LAN currently, it will still be at the 192.168.0.x/24 pointing to the sub-interface address.  On the Web GUI under Data-Default Gateway, it currently has 192.168.0.1.  Should I change that to something else on my final configuration.

That is a common question about default-route vs. default-gateway.  The command you are referencing (ip default-gateway <ip address>) is only applicable if the unit is in bridge mode.  Here is an explanation of default-route vs. default-gateway:  https://supportforums.adtran.com/docs/DOC-2443

That makes sense.  So if I need to use the default route on the NetVanta, I would use the next hop which would be the information provided by Verizon in my case.  So I could go ahead and make that change now in the configuration and it wouldn't effect anything because I'm not in bridge mode.

You will need a default route (0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 <next hop IP address>) pointing to the next hop IP address that the Internet Service Provider gives you, so that traffic exiting your network destined for the public Internet has a route to get there.  You will not need the ip default-gateway <ip address> command because you are not bridging.

That makes sense and that should be shown in the Route table as it is currently.  However, one more question on the default gateway of the router itself:

The Web GUI has this question:

Use this form to set the default gateway for the NetVanta unit. This is useful only if IP routing is not enabled on the unit. If IP routing is enabled on the unit, you should use the Route Table to add a default route.

Currently, we are using IP Routing, when we make the move and put in the final configurations for the new building, IP Routing will no longer be turned on for our primary line because we'll be using the 802.1q encapsulation on Eth 0/1 while Eth 0/2 would have the IP Routing, it would be for a failover support.

Having said that, since one of our sub-interfaces will be on the 192.168.0.x/24 range, do I need to change the default gateway of the router itself at that point?

I apologize for any confusion I've caused.

When you are in routed mode (which you are in your application), the default-gateway setting has no effect on anything in your configuration.  It doesn't matter what you configure it for, it will never be used.

Oh okay that makes sense.  So it doesn't matter as long as I'm not in bridged mode which I won't be in this case since this is my edge device.  If my 5305 was sitting behind another router on the network then I would need to focus in on that but since it's my edge device with the next hop being my ISP, none of this applies.

You have been nothing but helpful Levi.  Your guidance and support has led me to become very comfortable with Adtran products and my company will push forward with their use.
