7100 PRI or SIP TRUNK

Jump to solution

Hi,

I have a customer that have about 5 sites connected via MPLS.  Most of their sites has a 7100, which has a PRI to a 908e, then 908e has a sip trunk that connects to the carrier.  Are there any adavantages to this?  Can't we just connect sip trunk straight from the 7100 to the Carrier?

Can the 7100 handle 2 Dual T1 card for a total of 6.0 Mbps?

From what I know, the stated capacity when using T1 NIMs, is 4.5 Mbps and hence only one dual T1-NIM can be used in the chassis.  To get to 4.5 Mbps, one unit each of dual-T1 NIM and single-T1 NIM in the chassis.

touristsis,

Yes you can connect the sip trunk directly to the 7100.  However then the provider does not have a demarc point unless you want to give them admin access to the 7100 directly.

Alternatively, if the provider manages the 908e and the customer manages the 7100, the provider can configure the 908e with an upstream SIP trunk to the PSTN and a second SIP trunk or proxy to the 7100.  This eliminates a pair of RTP-TDM conversions.

If the original poster manages both the 908e and the 7100, then it is indeed probably better to connect directly via SIP and do away with the 908e.

Yes, using both NIM slots.

One thing to be careful of is the 908 is providing a tdm to sip conversion "kind of what we want a SBC to do but with IP". If you go native sip on the 7100's you need to understand how the Carrier sip service works as it may want to see sip from a single IP address that is on the 908.  This would cause a problem if you are currently transferring calls between locations via extension dialing.
