Logging Adjacency Changes for OSPF and BGP - Is This Possible?

Jump to solution

Recently we were troubleshooting a router that was having WAN problems, and it was noticed that when OSPF adjacency is lost it is not recorded in the event log.  Is there a way to enable this?

We have not made a configuration to see if this behavior is the same with BGP, so a second question would be: Will Adtran Routers notate a loss of BGP Adjacency in the event log?

Thank you for asking this question in the support community.

To troubleshoot OSPF neighbor adjacencies in AOS, use the debug ip ospf adj command.  This command displays OSPF adjacency events to the console.

On page 19 of the Configuring BGP in AOS guide, there is a section about logging neighbor changes in BGP, and how to enable it:

Log Neighbor Changes

Use the bgp log-neighbor-changes command to control the logging of neighbor state changes. This command controls logging of BGP neighbor state changes (up/down) and resets. This information is useful for troubleshooting and determining network stability.

(config-bgp)#bgp log-neighbor-changes

I hope that makes sense, but please to not hesitate to reply to this post with additional questions or information.  I will be happy to help in any way I can.

We have just verified the bgp log-neighbor-changes - thank you for pointing us to this, it is invaluable.

Regarding OSPF, debug ip ospf adj seems to only output to the terminal until the session times out.  This means that if we are investigating a "network anomaly" that occurred last night or the previous morning, etc. then we won't be able to see anything in the log.  Are there plans to add this very simple feature to AOS in the future?

A feature request for the ospf log-neighbor-changes configuration command was submitted previously, and is currently being evaluated for implementation.  I recommend you contact your ADTRAN sales representative for the current status of this feature request.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.
