Netvanta 3120 - Reset to default via GUI, no more access

Jump to solution

Good evening,

Everything I have done is in the Web interface since I am unskilled in the CLI.  After updating my 3120 to firmware NV3120A-R10-11-0-E I experienced some odd things so I swapped the main and backup firmware (which was working fine before), saved, then restored a config from before the update to NV3120A-R10-11-0-E.  There were still a couple of remote access issues to a client site so I decided to default the unit via the GUI.  Once the unit rebooted it was not longer handing out IPs (as if no more DHCP) and I cannot access the GUI.  I have set my PC IP to static 10.10.10.10 to be in the default IP range of 10.10.10.1, but I get no ping to the unit.  I tried the IP that it had before I defaulted and no ping either.  The power light is green, the Ethernet port I connect to (1, 2, 3 or 4) A is lit green because I am connected to it, but that is it.

Can someone please help me recover my NV3120?

Thank you in advance,

André Laurence

I apologize that you are still having trouble with this unit.  After you upgraded the firmware (as you indicated above), did you attempt to factory default the unit?  Here is the guide to do so:  NetVanta 3120 and 3130 Reset Button and Bootstrap Operations

I think you mean 3120 and not 1320 based on the firmware you listed.

There's a pinhole next to the Ethernet 1 jack that hides a reset button.  Push it with a paper clip for 5 seconds and then try to connect to 10.10.10.1 again.  If that doesn't work, more advanced techniques can be found here:

Good morning,

Oops, a slight case of dyslexia.  Sorry.  Yes, I meant the 3120.  I will try the reset and get back to this post.  Thank you.

I just tried the reset button (5 seconds) and the ETH1 light comes up red, but no DHCP.  If I turn the 3120 off then back on, the ETH1 light stays off.  Pressing the reset button 5 seconds turns the ETH1 light back on, but that is it.  A couple of years ago I had a similar issue where this 3120 was in this state and support gave me instructions to recover.  From looking at your link to more advanced options I believe it was bootstrap mode, where I had to tell the 3120 which firmware to use since none was in the primary "slot".  I will try the instructions on the page you linked to and come back here with the results.

Thank you.

I have successfully connected to Bootstrap mode via Putty using the instructions in the link you provided, but I don't know the Show command, or the command to set the primary firmware.  Can you help me out?

Instructions for recovering from bootstrap mode are here:

You might first try a full factory reset as described in the previous document here:

If you're still stuck it may be your best bet to contact Adtran support and open a case.

Good morning,

Thank you for you reply.  I decided to clear the flash and start fresh.  I uploaded NV3120A-R10-9-3-E.biz since it is the recommended firmware, I also uploaded the default config file that I was sent from Adtran support, I set the firmware as primary and executed the Boot command.  The 3120 boots and has lights lit as if everything was perfect (Stat, ETH0, INET, Port 1 lit green), but I still don't get an IP from it and even if my notebook IP is static (10.10.10.10) I only ping while it is booting, then once Stat is lit green the ping dies.  I am stumped and about to send this 3120 to recycling.

Any last suggestions?

It's alive, it responds to pings.  It sounds like the configuration is wedged or partly wedged.  After it boots can you try its previously-configured IP?

During the boot sequence while it answers pings can you telnet to it and send an escape or control-C, then get to the bootstrap prompt, or follow the instructions in previous links to get it to bootstrap mode?

Open a support case if all else fails. They may be able to help you recover it.

Good morning,

I agree that it seems alive, but there is no way to access it when it boots up completely which is very odd.  It can always be set to bootstrap mode by pressing the reset button quickly when the stat light starts to flash.  Once in bootstrap everything seems normal and looks like it is perfect.  I have opened a case with Adtran and will see if they have any last suggestions before the unit goes to recycling.

Thank you for your help.  The links you provided, coupled with this issue, have given me a basic grasp on the CLI commands and I now realize how it is much more flexible and "easier" to set things up rather than use the GUI.

Regards,

André

It sounds like you may want to follow the instructions here:

You'll need a 3120 AOS image and a box configured as a TFTP server.  TFTP functionality is built in to Mac and Linux boxes and there are freeware downloads available for Windows.

Thank you, but that is what I explained above.  I followed those instructions: I accessed the 3120 in bootstrap, cleared the flash, set the IP to 10.10.10.1, uploaded the latest recommended firmware and a default startup-config file from Adtran, set the firmware as primary and rebooted.  It did not solve the issue and that is why I am stuck.  It makes no sense.

FYI, Windows 8.1 Pro has a TFTP server built in.  I found this out when I forgot to start SolarWinds TFTP Server software and started the copy tftp flash to upload the new firmware.

Good afternoon Levi,

My NV3120 is still not giving IP addresses and has no GUI.  When I turn on the unit the lights indicate that it boots normally and all seems fine, but when I connect to the router with a computer no IP address is handed out.  If I set a static IP of 10.10.10.10 in the PC I am not able to access the Web interface at 10.10.10.1 and the router does not respond to ping.

I followed the instructions that I was provided by Adtran support:

1) I accessed the 3120 in bootstrap

2) Cleared the flash

3) Set the IP to 10.10.10.1

4) Uploaded the latest recommended firmware (NV3120A-R10-9-3-E.biz)

5) Uploaded a default startup-config file from Adtran support

6) Set the firmware as primary and rebooted.

This did not solve the issue.

Re: Netvanta 3120 - Reset to default via GUI, no more access

Good afternoon,

I am 90% sure that I had reset the unit, but to confirm I pulled the unit from storage and connected a computer to the 3120.  Once it was powered up I pressed the reset button for 30 seconds and about 15 seconds in the computer got an IP and showed private network.  After 30 seconds the 3120 rebooted, powered up and I am now logged into the unit GUI interface!!!

I was pretty sure I had defaulted it with the button, but maybe that was before clearing the flash via bootstrap CLI.  Thank you very much for the information and even though I have replaced the 3120, I will now be able to use it in another application.

Thanks again!
